Importance of Yoga in Our Lives

21 June – An appreciation day for benefits of yoga in our lives

Yoga is a perfect combination of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Since it is practiced from ancient times, one can easily notice the effects on the body of those who practice yoga regularly. There are different styles of yoga like vinyasa, ashtanga, hatha, iyengar, tantra, kundalini and power yoga. All these styles have its own significance and are performed for the betterment of the body. It was suggested by Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi to the United Nations in 2014, that June 21 should be celebrated as the International Yoga Day, as it is the longest day of the year.  He stated that:

“Yoga is a precious gift of India’s ancient tradition. This tradition is 5,000 years old. It represents the unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; balance between man and nature; a holistic path to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to feel the sense of oneness with you, the world and nature. By improving our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in well being.” — Narendra Modi, UN General Assembly, September 2014.

There are a vast number of benefits of yoga in our daily life, but in this article, we are going to look at the basic changes yoga will bring in your life:

  • All around Fitness:  A healthy body has equilibrium of body fitness, mental fitness and spiritual well- being. Yoga targets all these three components at the same time. Yoga poses and pranayama are a wholesome package for all-around fitness. Being a regular with your yoga exercises will improve your mental health and you will also restore your physical strength.
  • Helps in Weight Loss: Obesity is a major problem nowadays. Being an 8-hour desk worker and having lazy Sundays, makes you gain weight. It might be tough to manage a gym with all this. But, you can practice yoga from home as well. By doing simple exercises like kapalbhati, anulom vilom and sun salutation can help you lose weight. With regular practice of yoga, you become sensitive to your body needs and functions and keep the process of food intake in check.
  • Reduces Mental Pressure: Stress is a condition that almost everyone goes through. One cannot simply eradicate stress from life, but with yoga, you can reduce stress and deal with it in such a way that it will have no effect on your performance. A few minutes of meditation will calm your disturbed mind and will accumulate inner peace within you.

  • Relief in Joint Pain: Yoga increases the range of motion in joint. This decreases inflammation from joint and increases flexibility in the joints. Regular practice of yoga increases bone strength and circulates synovial fluid in the joint.
  • Improving Relationship: Yoga helps you restore mental balance; this balance makes you feel contaminated with yourself. You feel happy and relaxed, this, in turn, makes you act better and sensitively with your colleagues and family members.

Understanding of Yoga is restricted to asana, but people should see the benefits of yoga and the peace it offers to us. The best thing about yoga is that it can be practiced by any age group. Dhyana or meditation trains you to discipline your mind. Being a regular to yoga helps you to remove toxicants from your body and mind which in turn makes you have a pleasant personality. So, welcome yoga in your life and transform your lifestyle into a pleasant one!
